Dear UofG DH community,
At the THINC lab, we are organizing a reading group for FALL 2021 on the topic of race & technology. We ran a similar initiative last winter and want to continue the tradition.
The reading group is consensus-based (i.e., the group members will decide what texts we will read together). However, to gets us started, we are proposing to focus on selected chapters from the following books:
Browne, S. (2015). Dark matters: On the surveillance of blackness. Duke University Press https://www.dukeupress.edu/dark-matters
McIlwain, C. D. (2019). Black software: The internet and racial justice, from the Afronet to Black lives matter. Oxford University Press, USA https://global.oup.com/academic/product/black-software-9780190863845
We will be meeting on Zoom every two weeks between September 22 - December 1, 4-5 pm for six meetings.
Lastly, we want to keep the group’s format open and flexible. So our plan is that we can together, based on a group consensus, decide which chapters of the three books we will be reading at each of the meetings.
However, to get us off to a good start, we are planning to read/skim for our first meeting on Sept 22, 4-5 pm the introductions of the two books listed above and then discuss what we want to read for our next meeting. Both books are available electronically through the UofG library here and here.
